Excellence in Ecological Restoration Awards Applications Due March 31

In an effort to recognize high-quality restoration sites and develop professional standards of excellence in natural resource management and ecological restoration, a Chicago Wilderness working group developed the Excellence in Ecological Restoration Program. This accreditation program is administered by the Commission on Excellence in Ecological Restoration.

The primary purpose of the Excellence in Ecological Restoration Program is to establish best management practices, which will improve ecological restoration management efforts in the Chicago Wilderness region and across the nation through a voluntary comprehensive assessment process. Applications are due on March 31.

Calumet Heritage Area Management Plan Seeking Public Comment through March 22

This draft Management Plan was prepared by staff and Board members from the Calumet Heritage Partnership, the Calumet Collaborative, and the Field Museum with input from numerous partners and residents of the Calumet region. The Management Plan is available for public comment through March 22.

Picturing the Prairie: A Guide to the Prairies of Chicago Wilderness
To accompany the upcoming exhibit Picturing the Prairie at the Chicago Botanic Garden, Openlands is creating a special guide to prairies of the Chicago Wilderness on the Openlands Get Outside Map, to debut on May 1st, when the exhibition opens to the public. We ask Chicago Wilderness organizations to help us create this guide and include more locations on the Get Outside Map. How you can help:

Corporate Council

The Corporate Council met on February 11. The CWCC reviewed the Green Vision goal #3 and brainstormed a list of potential organizations and individuals to participate in future discussions around the priority areas: Corporate/Industrial/ School Campuses, Rights of Ways, Municipalities and Residential, and Tree Canopy. Tom Slowinksi and George Milner of V3 presented on their Gray Willows Mitigation Project. The next meeting will be May 13 at 1 PM. For more information contact Laura Reilly

Education

Next Meeting March 24 at 11 am. Land Acknowledgement Statements: Moving From Paper to Action. This talk by Adam Kessel will discuss the process the Forest Preserves of Cook County undertook to write their Land Acknowledgment (LA) Statement. This will include the identification of resources and partnerships to write a Land Acknowledgment. We will also explore how the statement is used in programming, partnership building, and other unique ways to deliver Land Acknowledgment Statements.

Natural Resources Management
The Science and Natural Resource team met on March 9 to review the Green Vision Goal #1: Healthy Lands and to discuss the re-formation of task forces and connecting staff with CW new or existing teams to address issues such as:

Volunteer Stewardship, Prescribed Burning,  Invasive Species-Northeastern Illinois Invasive Plant Program, Cooperative Weed Management Area, Illinois Invasive Species Council, Hydrology, Wildlife, Priority Species, Oak Ecosystems, Urban Tree Canopy, Quality Assessment of Natural Area Cores and Corridors, Data Collection and Administration, Seed Sourcing and Supply.
