Invitation to Executive Council and ICL Update
Please prioritize the upcoming Executive Council meeting on April 21, from 9:30 to 12 noon.
The Institute for Conservation Leadership (ICL) will lead us through a highly interactive training and your participation is key. ICL has deep understanding and skill developing and facilitating dynamic and creative online meetings and training sessions using a variety of tools and platforms.
Over the course of the next 6 months, ICL will share their knowledge of network development and planning, and experience supporting hundreds of coalitions throughout their 30-year history as we integrate the Green Vision for Chicago.
Due to the interactive nature of this session, we ask that you plan to attend the entire session. At this meeting, ICL will facilitate a discussion to:
· Understand Chicago Wilderness’ planning process and how that can lead to alignment around shared goals and greater impact.
· Gather feedback about what members want from the plan and how to shape the process.
· Share “network theory” concepts and discuss their application to Chicago Wilderness
Gather feedback about current trends and impacts of our individual and collective work.
You’ll come away from this meeting with a greater understanding of where we are headed as a network, more connected to your colleagues, and excited about how your organization can benefit from being a part of Chicago Wilderness.

Take the City Nature Challenge 2021: Chicago Metro!
From April 30 through May 3, 2021, hundreds of cities worldwide will compete to see who can make the most observations of urban flora and fauna, find the most species, and get the most people participating.
The City Nature Challenge (CNC) aims to engage residents in learning about their local nature and to help all of us better understand urban biodiversity.
Anyone can take part on their own, assist others with identification at a bioblitz in a nearby park or natural area.

"A map tells you where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’re going — in a sense it’s three tenses in one", said filmmaker Peter Greenaway, explaining his fascination with maps. He might just as well have been talking about the Chicago Wilderness Mapping Hub, now under development.
As charted at Cafes in October and January, the Hub will be the place to track CW's progress in each of its seven goal areas, showing at a glance what CW partners have done and what they seek to accomplish. And it will also reward those who want more than a glance: it will be a place to store and access the data that informs the vision and provides a key tool for the work ahead.
Thus far, a team led by Mark Johnston (Field Museum), Jason Navota (CMAP), Jack Brunner (Tetra Tech), Tom Slawski (SWRPC), Joe Exl (NIRPC), Craig Shillinglaw (Openlands), Casey Sullivan (Argonne National Labs), and Mark Bouman (FIeld Museum) has done a fair bit of thinking to shape the Hub into something that meets CW needs using tools now available through ESRI. The team is working to stay in good communication with each of the goals teams, and an intern will soon come on board to help upload data into the hub. But there is much still to do.
The two Cafes also signaled two key findings: there is broad support for the Hub, and a number of folks indicated a willingness to contribute as it takes shape. If you raised your hand at one of the Cafes -- thank you! You can expect a direct communication from us shortly on next steps. And you are most welcome to reach out to us directly at mbouman@fieldmuseum.org.

Climate Assessment Report for Illinois Released
Illinois Chapter of The Nature Conservancy announced the release of the first-ever Climate Assessment Report for Illinois. The report brings together the expertise of more than 40 scientists and technical experts to explain the most up-to-date information on how climate change is expected to affect Illinois. It contains useful information on how climate change is likely to influence local and regional climate patterns, with more detailed information on how climate change could impact hydrology, agriculture, public health, and nature in our state.
This report will help Illinois communities understand climate change in a more tangible way, and will empower more people to take action to address climate change and guide Illinois in a more resilient direction. The executive summary for your review. The final, fully-designed report will be available in mid-May.
