| | | | OAKTOBER IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! OAK ECOSYSTEM RECOVERY PROJECT UPDATE.
| | | | |
|
| | | | The Oak Ecosystems Recovery Project, housed at the Chicago Region Trees Initiative, continues to implement the recommendations of the Oak Ecosystems Recovery Plan, developed by Chicago Wilderness, by working collaboratively with partners across the region. The group is building on a strong foundation that focuses on remnant oak habitat in each county across the Chicago Wilderness region. In the coming year, it will shift its efforts to increasingly inspiring people about oak ecosystems, particularly with outreach to landowners whose properties support oaks. Toward that end, Healthy Homes, the second of three brochures in the Healthy Brochures Series was released in August. It follows last year's Healthy Hedges. Healthy Habitats—featuring management best practices for larger properties—will come out early next year.
When better to learn about oaks than during OAKtober? It's right around the corner, and many CW members are ready to celebrate with virtual or social-distanced events for the general public. Are you planning an OAKtober event or a tree-themed event during OAKtober? Add it to the calendar!
Many of us have personal connections to oaks. We urge you to share a story for OAKtober using the Tree-mendous Tree Stories platform developed by The Morton Arboretum and Openlands. Read a story, be inspired, and tell a story. Then share it with others. Each connection we make helps others discover how vital oaks are.
If you would like to get involved with the Oak Ecosystem Recovery Project, please be in touch with the project's consultant coordinator, Brandon Hayes.

How can we continue to voice the importance of conservation policy while remaining cognizant of increasing demands on our legislators’ schedules? What’s new with the Government Relations Community and why did we replace “Committee” with "Community"? Please join this discussion to share your ideas on how we can build a strong and friendly network of advocates for healthy human and natural communities.
