October Newsletter 2020

Dear Chicago Wilderness Colleagues,

On behalf of the CW Climate Goal formation team, I write to all Alliance members with a request for your assistance.

Please complete the survey linked below by Friday, October 23.  It is refreshingly short (under 5 minutes) and ever-so-important as we assess the climate expertise existing in the Alliance.  There may be several from your organization who receive this – that is our intention.  Please answer from your own perspective to the best of your knowledge.

Many thanks,

Michelle Carr

Setting Goals: Access to Nature and Benefits to People in the Chicago Wilderness Region

Chicago Wilderness is putting together a slate of goals to help move the alliance forward. The collective goal to advance Access to Nature and Benefits to People in the Chicago Region for Chicago Wilderness has been drafted based on information from a workshop on August 24th with a variety of stakeholders. We have sorted through the great notes taken at the August 24th workshop and have put together a draft goal statement.  We need your help to make sure this draft goal is adapted to best represent regional needs and aspirations.

Please consider attending a virtual input session on Monday, October 19th at 10am. The input session will offer an opportunity to provide verbal feedback, or to discuss points in the goal statement further. We are also happy to meeting with people 1:1 to hear your insights (email apaul@fieldmuseum.org to schedule). Please contact us with the best time to reach you and we’d be happy to talk.

Volunteer Stewards
College Burn Crew Working Group

This group is a collaboration of governmental organizations, non-profits, and colleges/universities whose purpose is to create opportunities for college students to take the S130/190 prescribed burn trainings and gain field experience.

As many of us had abbreviated burn seasons in the spring, they met virtually on Friday, October 9th at 9am to discuss what burning with students and volunteers will look like in a COVID world. Contact Jackie Bero at jbero@mccdistrict.orgfor more information.
Chicago Wilderness Prescription Burn Crew Training (Online) Chicago Wilderness offers the Midwest Ecological Prescription Burn Crew Member Training class online through The Morton Arboretum. Based on the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s (NWCG) S-130 and S-190 courses, this two-day training covers the basics of such topics as fire behavior, controlled burn techniques, and smoke management. The objective is to provide participants with the background necessary to safely participate on the crew of a controlled burn. Class will take place using Zoom web conferencing, and will include presentations by expert instructors, live class discussions, and an online final exam. There will be breaks throughout the day and a lunch break in the middle of the day.

Please be aware that although the training is accepted by many of the natural resource management agencies in the CW region as the minimum training required for a participant on a burn crew, it does not carry the official NWCG certification. An online exam must be completed and passed after the end of the second session in order to receive certification.

Wednesday, October 28, 12:00 p.m. central time: Access to online reading materials and information for accessing the web conferences will be sent to registered participants
Thursday and Friday, October 29 and 30, 2020 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Online sessions using Zoom webconferencing.
