Seeking Steering Committee Members to Lead and Move the Green Vision Forward

A sincere thanks and a ton of gratitude to outgoing Steering Committee member Alison Paul (Field Museum) who contributed time, skill, and energy to keep Chicago Wilderness moving forward these past three years. Thank you for everything you put in to the success of Chicago Wilderness. In addition, we have three unfilled At-Large Positions.

Steering Committee At-Large Position Description of Duties 2020

The Steering Committee serves as the Executive Committee of the Executive Council. It includes the officers of the Chicago Wilderness Alliance and five to eleven additional at-large partners, drawn from the Chicago Wilderness Alliance partnership, who are elected by the Executive Council. The Steering Committee oversees the day-to-day business of the Alliance under authority of the Executive Council, including internal and external communications; programs, in consultation with Chicago Wilderness Alliance partnership and existing working groups, task forces and committees; financial coordination, reporting, and budgeting; planning and leading Executive Council meetings; and partnership policy. The Steering Committee also serves to align the Alliance behind the Green Vision, promotes coordination among CW working teams to enhance collective impact, and recommends multi-year goals and annual plans to advance the mission of Chicago Wilderness.

The Nominations Committee will accept nominations and work with the current steering committee to identify and prioritize candidates that represent the racial/ethnic, sexual orientation and gender diversity of Chicago Wilderness members and the region we serve. Along with demographic diversity on the Committee, we also hope to achieve diversity in organizational size represented; the geography of the region; non-profit, government, and business organizations, etc.

Join Us on Friday, September 25 for Cultivating an Advocacy Community to Move Forward

How is Chicago Wilderness coming together to advocate on behalf of people and nature during these uncertain times? What tools can we use to effectively reach out to audiences, both old and new, both internal and external? How can we continue to voice the importance of conservation policy while remaining cognizant of increasing demands on our legislators’ schedules? What’s new with the Government Relations Community and why did we replace “Committee” with "Community"? Please join this discussion to share your ideas on how we can build a strong and friendly network of advocates for healthy human and natural communities.

Communications
The Communications Committee met in August and brainstormed ideas to increase diversity within the Chicago Wilderness membership. Ideas include recruiting more staff from existing partner organizations and identifying new organizations as potential members. The committee also discussed a paid communications and partnership internship to support professional growth within underrepresented communities and roughed out a work plan. Strategies for increasing visibility of partner organizations and followers for CW include hosting Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter takeovers. Finally, details about upcoming events, including the Wild Things Conference in February 2021, were shared. The committee's next virtual meeting will be in September and all are welcome to attend; details coming soon. Contact Maria Sadowski for more information.
Corporate Council

The Corporate Council will meet via Zoom on August 31 at 1PM. New CW partner, Root-Pike Watershed Initiative, will give a presentation on their collaborations with Corporate Council members. Network and share with colleagues and learn more about the Green Vision collective goals and other activities. Contact Sara Race for more information.

Education
The Education Team will meeting virtually on September 9 via Zoom.  More details will be coming soon. Also, the Education Committee is seeking an additional co-chair.  It's a great opportunity to learn, lead, network and grow with colleagues and professionals throughout the regional.  Contact Jessica Prescott-Smith for details.
Green Vision Collective Goals

As Chicago Wilderness works to establish the new Green Vision goals, we need your help to identify individuals who are interested in helping in the following ways:

  • Crafting and refining the language of the goals
  •  Forming new committees or joining existing committees to execute the goals
  • Helping to develop operational plans to structure work towards the goals
  • Identifying pilot projects around each goal to demonstrate success and entice outside funding

To clarify, you or the people you sign up do not need to be Chicago Wilderness members! We are interested in creating the most inclusive, transparent process possible.

For any questions, reach out to Daniel Suarez.

Mighty Acorns Virtual Partnership Gathering Fall 2020

The Mighty Acorns Partnership conducted its first ever on-line gathering for Fall 2020. These meetings were broken into three weeks, an hour each, to discuss virtual options for delivering the Mighty Acorns program for the 2020-2021 school year. As a result of these three meetings, the partnership was able to collaborate in creating a virtual document filled with hyperlinks to the google drive for administrators and teachers to utilize resources in outdoor education via four methods: in-person activities, virtual-video activities, at-home activities, and outdoor activities (at a local green space). For all three one-hour meetings a total of 36 people participated (including several school teachers).
