University of Illinois Extension Climate Stewards

This new four-week Climate Stewards program from University of Illinois Extension gives community members practical tools to talk about climate change, take local action, and inspire others. Led by university scientists, the interactive program combines conversations with local leaders, real-world scenarios, hands-on activities, peer connections, and field trips.

Wednesdays, 3–6pm | October 14–November 4
All sessions will be held in person in Cook County:

  • Week 1, Oct 14: Sagawau Environmental Learning Center

  • Week 2, Oct 21: Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center

  • Week 3, Oct 28: Big Marsh Park

  • Week 4, Nov 4: Sand Ridge Nature Center

What you’ll gain

Participants will:

  • Learn about local perspectives and understanding of climate issues.

  • Explore strategies for navigating the social, psychological, and emotional aspects of climate and conservation work.

  • Develop effective ways to communicate about climate impacts in Illinois.

  • Gain knowledge and skills to participate in local climate adaptation, mitigation, and resilience efforts.

K–12 teachers: Full attendance qualifies for up to 16 ISBE-approved Professional Development Hours.

Following the course, Climate Stewards are encouraged to stay involved through community science, land and water stewardship, civic engagement, and education activities.

Space is limited to 25 participants. Register by September 30:

Cost: $80 standard fee or $120 for those who would like to help support another participant.
