The walk is about one mile on relatively flat terrain. Food will be available before and after the walk, and everyone is welcome to stay for a drink on Wiley’s patio, a beautiful spot to watch the sunset. Here’s a little background information on Coyote Run’s indigenous roots. When the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District built the course in 2004, the Park District Board mandated environmental stewardship as a central part of its mission. So, the trees and shrubs planted on the course are native. The course originally was designed with about 15 acres of unmaintained fescue, a non-native grass. This has since been converted to native prairie species. Although the course’s ponds are part of a large stormwater retention system, their banks are now also planted with native vegetation. Emergent plants such as bulrush and pickerelweed line the water’s edge. At this time of year, these natural areas are alive with bees, wasps, bumblebees, and butterflies, including monarchs. Thanks to the abundant insects and welcoming habitat, the course also supports many bird, reptile, amphibian and mammal species. Join us on July 21st, from 6 – 8pm at Coyote Run Golf Course, (Kedzie Avenue across from HF High School), in front of Wiley’s Grill. Email warddv52@gmail.com if you plan to attend.
