The Lake Plain Coastal Preserves is an ecological complex of nearly contiguous natural areas spanning the Wisconsin–Illinois border along the western shore of Lake Michigan. Led by Lake Plain Coordinator Belynda Alberte, the tour will include stops at Illinois Beach State Park, Spring Bluff Forest Preserve, and Chiwaukee Prairie State Natural Area.

Discover the natural heritage of the Lake Plain and explore the ecological and cultural significance of several of its remarkable natural areas. Along the way, learn how the Lake Plain Coalition brings diverse partners together to protect this landscape as one connected ecosystem.

Afternoon field trip schedule:

  • Note: there is no bus for this trip - participants drive themselves to the tour stops.

12 Noon - Meet and have lunch at the parking lot southeast of North Point Marina, Winthrop Harbor, IL 60096

12:30pm Intro to the Lake Plain Coastal Preserves and the Lake Plain Coalition

1:00pm Illinois Beach State Park, North Unit

2:00pm Spring Bluff Forest Preserve

3:00pm Chiwaukee Prairie State Natural Area

4:00pm Drive back to parking lot southeast of North Point Marina

4:10-4:30pm Closing remarks

5:00pm Optional: Join fellow attendees from all of today's field trips at a networking/social gathering at Bills Pizza and Pub North
