Petcoke: Tracing Dirty Energy, opens at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago on July 21st.
This exhibition features new works by artists and collaborative teams made in reaction to the environmental and public health impact of petcoke, a dust-like waste product containing carbon and other dangerous compounds resulting from tar sands refined in the Chicago region and beyond. The Southeast Side Chicago community reacted to the plight by mobilizing activists and organizers to educate and inform, protest, and ultimately move the needle on legislation that directly affected their lives. The MoCP partnered with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Southeast Environmental Task Force (SETF) to add artists’ voices to the response.
