Prairie Restoration Programs

Once abundant across the region, prairies are now a rare ecosystem in our region. Birds, reptiles, insects, plants and many other species thrive in their fertile soil and moderate climate.

Native prairies are vital ecosystems in Chicago Wilderness. Native prairies in our region have declined and affected our wildlife, including the 12 priority species. Prairie restoration programs aim to restore and conserve native prairies. Volunteer at your local prairie restoration program to aid in efforts to save these important habitats.
