This 32-hour course (24 hours online self study/8 hours classroom) encompasses the following sub-courses:
  • S-130 Basic Wildfire/Prescribed Fire Firefighter
  • S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior
  • L-180 Human Factors on the Fireline
  • I-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System
Course curriculum include: wildfire and prescribed burn terminology; effects of fuel, weather and topography on wildfire and prescribed burns; fire line safety; fire line construction; transportation safety, fire physics, the use of basic firing equipment (such as fusees and drip torches); and introduction to wildland firefighting tools, pumps, engines, and hoses. 

Successful course completion will result in earning a NWCG (National Wildfire Coordinating Group) Certificate. This credential may be necessary to work wildfires or to participate in prescribed fires sponsored by some agencies. see link below to course information.

In addition, Wehr Nature Center is hostingIntermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290) on April 10, 2020S -290 builds the intro course and explores the interaction of fuels, weather, and topography on wildland fire behavior.
