Where is home, for you? What makes a place home? We’ll look at these questions in light of knowing the land where we live. Each program in the Sense of Place series highlights the special and unique landscape of Kane County. We will look at the interplay of human culture and the land as well as local knowledge and folklore. A Dutch windmill, a Japanese tea garden, a Frank Lloyd Wright house, a bear cage, an alligator pool – what more can you ask for in an estate-turned-forest-preserve? Learn about this fascinating property and its origins in the 19th century, during this docent-led tour. The program will weave the story of Colonel George and Mrs. Nelle Fabyan, the Riverbank estate, the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Fabyans’ love of the exotic. We will also discuss Fabyan’s place in the events of the early 20th century. The tour will include a walk through the house, or Villa, as well as a stroll in the tranquil calm of the Fabyan Japanese Garden. Meet at the Villa.
